GuessIt Ball — Official Rules

A competitive prediction, signaling, and bluffing party game for 2 to 4 players.

Game Overview

Players take turns as the Offensive Player to score points by signaling plays with their hands. The selected Defensive Player tries to guess and block the play.

  • Players: 2–4 players
  • Materials needed: Paper and pen (or digital app) for tracking scores.
  • Turn Order: Rotates clockwise around the group.

1. Plays & Unlocks

Offensive plays correspond to hand signals (showing 1 to 4 fingers) with matching point values:

Play Signal (Front Hand) Point Value Availability
Play #1 1 Finger 1 pt Rounds 1+
Play #2 2 Fingers 2 pts Rounds 1+
Play #3 3 Fingers 3 pts Rounds 1+
Play #4 4 Fingers 4 pts Rounds 4+ only

2. How a Turn Works

On your turn, you are the Offensive Player.

  1. Select Target: Choose one player to defend against you this turn.
  2. Choose Mode: Declare whether you are playing Basic Mode (1 Hand) or Option Mode (2 Hands).

Option A: Basic Mode (1 Hand)

  1. Both the Offense and Defense simultaneously hold out 1 hand showing 1, 2, or 3 fingers (or 4 fingers starting in Round 4).
  2. Outcome:
    • MATCH: Defense guessed the exact same number → 0 points for Offense. Turn ends.
    • NO MATCH: Defense guessed wrong → Offense scores the full play value (1, 2, 3, or 4 pts).

Option B: Option Mode (2 Hands)

An advanced play that adds a hidden Run / Pass bluff to the main finger signal.

  1. Setup:
    • Offense prepares their main signal hand (1–4 fingers) out front.
    • Offense places their second hand behind their back (visible to spectators, but hidden from the defender).
      • Open Palm = Pass
      • Closed Fist = Run
  2. The Guess: Before revealing front hands, the defender must call out "RUN!" or "PASS!".
  3. The Reveal: Both players reveal their front hands.
  4. Scoring:
    • Main Play Score: Standard rules apply (Full points if unmatched; 0 points if matched).
    • Option Bonus/Penalty:
      • Defender guessed INCORRECTLY → Offense gets +1 bonus point.
      • Defender guessed CORRECTLY → Offense takes a -1 point penalty.

3. Winning the Game

  • Primary Victory: First player to reach 10 points wins immediately.
  • Time Limit Variant: If playing a set number of rounds (e.g., 12 rounds), the player with the highest score at the end of the final round wins.
